100 Percent Shea Butter Soap

012019_32840wp-e1549407121478.jpgAfter making a batch of 100% coconut oil soap, I decided to try another single oil soap just for fun.  I picked shea butter, mainly because I really like it. However, being considered a hard oil, I wasn’t sure how this soap would behave while mixing or how it would perform as soap. I was a bit surprised by both. I made a short video of my process including a lather test.  :)I decided not to scent this soap just to see how the oil and lye alone would behave. The final soap definitely smells like shea butter. As the days go by, the scent does get fainter. I did a lather test after a few days of making it and included it in the video (towards the end).  The lather is virtually non-existent and feels more like a silky lotion. After 4 weeks of curing, the lather test results remains the same.

Shea Butter – 100%

Superfat – 5%

Water = 2.2 x sodium hydroxide (31% lye solution)

To calculate the sodium hydroxide for your specific recipe/mold size, you can use a soap calculator like the one at Majestic Mountain Sage:  http://goo.gl/7hH5Vw

In case you’re interested, I have an affiliate store where I’ve listed all of the soap making supplies and materials that I purchase on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2DZmGfJ

If you use those links to buy anything, it won’t cost you anything extra, but I will receive a very small percentage of the sale.  Every little bit helps, though, so thank you very much if you do!  :)

Thank you so much for reading my post!

  1. Fantastic! Do you think people would be disappointed in the larger or would the creaminess make up for it? I’ve wanted to make a very high percentage she’s butter bar.

    • I do think most probably want a good lather. I actually don’t mind no lather, but I think I’m definitely in the minority. I had pondered lowering the Shea butter a bit (maybe down to 80%) and adding some oils to help with lather. Not sure how that would turn out, but it might be a good compromise. :)

  2. Hello Holly, just want you to know love your videos you are truly a master. Tempted to try the Shea butter soap. The other reason I’m writing is to ask where you had your Logo stamp done. Is this something I could get online.? Thank you, Rose Wood

  3. Hi Holly!
    Was glad to see this Shea Butter soap that you made. Perhaps sme sugar in the lye water might bring a few more bubbles. Also maybe a bit of coconut. But then it’s not 100% Shea😊As long as it’s not slimy like Olive Oil soap I would be ok with it. I have made 100% coconut oil soap SF @20% and scented with essential oils is orange and sage. It’s my family favorite!! The scent combo is fabulous and ih ciuse the lather is fabulous. Thanks Holly!❤

  4. Hello Holly,

    Always enjoy your lovely videos! Thanks for being so generous and sharing them w/the rest of the world. Where did you buy that creamy looking shea butter? Haven’t been able to find a great source in years! Hope to hear back.

    Thx again….
